Independent Dropped Object Surveys

December 2022 - > March 2024

OUI were engaged to carry out a program of independent dropped object surveys throughout a fleet of 34 passenger ferries of various sizes. The objective of the work was to provide survey data that would be used to inform a period of targeted remedial works without disrupting service or sailing. Rope access was required in order to facilitate inspection of the masts and certain sections of the vessels which are out of reach to the crew outside of drydock.

Overview

This project presented a few key challenges:

  • Working to the conditions of passenger ferries which were in active service whilst causing minimal disruption and working safely around the crew and public.

  • The logistics of mobilising materials and men up and down the length of Scotland and across to the major islands.

  • Providing deliverables, to be used by a multitude of people, to a precise specification

The solutions to these challenges lay in a robust pre-planning process, developing a good relationship with the client and selecting pro-active personnel with a good attitude.

The pre-planning process involved

  • Completing multiple site visits to vessels in drydock in order to understand vessel requirements and complete a risk assessment of the work involved

  • Drawing up detailed mobilisation plans in co-operation with client and building in alternatives so that if something goes wrong, it doesn't mean everything does

  • Through dialogue with the client dialling in the exact kind of documentation they require, and agreeing on a template before work commencement

Once onboard the focus switches to doing a good job to the client's individual specifications:

  • Comply with all HSE, Induction and Quality requirements from the vessel

  • Discuss every facet of work at height/work on ropes with crew to ensure it is carried out safely and to our own IRATA standards

  • Be methodical in collecting data and backing it up appropriately - you don't want to have to come back

  • Be a positive presence - stay out of the way, fix what you can as you go, co-operate and present a good public face

Survey deliverables consisted of a survey report in .pdf format and a workbook in Excel for every vessel in the fleet, as well as fixing un-noticed issues at height as we went with minimal fuss.

Conclusion:

In the end OUI were able to deliver the full survey program efficiently and safely to both our and the clients standards whilst imposing minimal disruption to the service of the vessels.

Platform Destruct + Replacement

Every stage of workscope - Pre-rigging setup, destruct + removal of existing structure and complete installation of new structure completed to the highest standards by one team of OUI Technicians.

Fabric Maintenance - RA cleaning of Derrick

Technicians used water-jetting in conjunction with rope access techniques to blast clean a large derrick area of a jack-up rig in a timely, efficient manner to the satisfaction of the client.
